Recently I attended a leadership conference, and I kept hearing a resounding and common theme – how a mentor benefits you professionally and personally.  During a conversation at my table with an entrepreneur just four years out of college and running her own business, she shared the incredible value her mentor provides when she is faced with operational challenges and difficult decisions.  She also expressed that much of her time focuses on developing business strategies that contribute to her own professional development.  She was articulate, and as I complemented her development experience, a question came to mind.  So, I asked her, how does she (the mentee) contribute to this partnership?  And then it dawned on us…. Reverse Mentoring!

The key difference in reverse mentoring is a powerful dynamic when both the mentor and mentee contribute to each other’s growth.  Both can resonate curiosity, enthusiasm and willingness to share and learn showing each that experiential learning is just as valuable regardless of your age, culture, background, expertise or title.  Both…

  • Build leadership skills
  • Develop self-confidence and self-awareness
  • Expand social networks
  • Retain multigenerational talent
  • Bridge knowledge gaps
  • Support inclusivity
  • Attain fresh perspectives
  • Build a learning culture
  • Learn new trends or technologies
  • Strengthens communication
  • Improve and increase productivity
  • Positively contribute to overall operational success

…  What else would you add?

Reverse mentorship is incredibly valuable within any organization, and it demonstrates your commitment to continuous learning.  Before year-end, because it’s never too late to invest in you, commit to your professional growth.  Set up a reverse mentorship to strengthen your talent which strengthens those around you, including your team and the organization – positively impacting a more cohesive and collaborative work environment.
